BREAK UP OF BAA SHOULD HALT HEATHROW EXPANSION PLANS - KRAMER

2.58.04pm UTC (GMT +0000) Wed 20th Aug 2008

Commenting on today's Competition Commission report, which recommends that BAA sell two of its three London airports, Susan Kramer, MP for Richmond Park and North Kingston said:

"The report is right to criticise BAA for failing to respond adequately to the needs of airport users and passengers."

"Shortage of airport capacity is constantly put forward as driving the need for Heathrow expansion but it is the lack of operational performance at our airports which is the real problem preventing them running more efficiently."

"Performance is cited time and again as a major issue at Heathrow - through frequent complaints about poor customer service, long queues, high costs, inefficient facilities and delays - seen most recently with the Terminal 5 debacle."

"The severe lack of competition in the British airport industry has led BAA to rest on its laurels and look to expansion as a means of improving the situation rather than simply running their airports more efficiently."
