Plastics recycling should begin now says Susan Kramer

Susan Kramer, Liberal Democrat Parliamentary Candidate called for doorstep pick-up of plastics recycling to begin in Richmond as soon as possible.

Following last night's (April 12) public meeting of Richmond Council's Waste Task Group in Clarendon Hall, York House, Kramer said:

Why can't we recycle plastic now?

"Richmond Council has come a long way from arguing that plastics recycling is impractical to now considering a small pilot scheme.

"However, the facts presented last night demonstrate that the costs are far more manageable than previously disclosed and that the market for recycled plastic bottles is quite buoyant. As one resident said, its time to stop the "chat, chat, chat".

"Our own surveys have shown overwhelming demand for plastics and cardboard recycling to begin now.

"Doorstep pick-up of plastics and cardboard would encourage residents to switch to a culture of recycling much more of their waste.

"We need now to consider financial inducements like a rebate on Council tax for those who recycle effectively."
